Energy Union to encompass a strengthened Energy Community

25 Feb 2015

The European Commission has declared that a
strengthened Energy Community will be part of the future “Energy Union”. In its
Framework Strategy for a Resilient Energy Union published today, the European
Commission stated it “will propose to strengthen the Energy Community,
ensuring effective implementation of the EU’s energy, environment and
competition acquis, energy market reforms and incentivising investments in the
energy sector
.” Closer integration of the EU and Energy Community energy
markets is the underlying goal. The Commission also announced it would
introduce common energy crisis management through preventive and emergency
plans at regional and EU level, including the Energy Community Contracting
Parties.

Director Kopač said: “This strategy defines
the future Energy Union and I am happy that the importance of the Energy
Community has been recognised in this framework document. The creation of an
Energy Union is going in parallel with the discussion on upgrading the Energy
Community Treaty, based on the report of the High Level Reflection Group. The
Ministerial Council will adopt concrete proposals strengthening the Energy
Community in October 2015.”
