Latest EU electricity market analysis released

The European Commission has published new analysis on European gas and electricity markets covering the third quarter of 2014. Here are some key facts from the reports:

Electricity

Electricity consumption in the EU rose by 1.5% from June to August 2014 compared to the same time in 2013.

Cross border flows of electricity grew by 10% in May to July 2014, compared to the same period in 2013 illustrating the increased integration and improving liquidity of European wholesale electricity markets.

Significant differences in electricity prices remain in the North West European region – the lowest prices were found in France in this quarter (€29/MWh), while the highest were in Latvia and Lithuania (€57/MWh).

EU wholesale electricity prices decreased significantly, while US gas prices increased, narrowing the price differences between the two regions.
